"The Good Earth", by Pearl Buck was an EXCELLENT book! I received it as a gift from my in-laws for Christmas. It takes place in the early 1900's in China. It is the story of Wang Lung and his life, from a young man just married to an old man, widowed and the father of five. The book is written by a woman, but the story is from Wang's point of view. The book made me stop and think many times - about how easy life is for us now - the conveniences that we have and how lucky I am to have been born in a country and a time when women are NOT viewed as slaves or property. My mind drifts often to Wang's wife, Olan, and her quiet strength. When I start to think about how hard life is, I only have to think of her, giving birth alone and then going to the fields to work. Can you imagine!!??
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in a wonderful story of survival.
