Something to Think About

This following excerpt was in the latest issue of "Body & Soul" magazine.

"...it makes sense if you think of aging not as a linear process, but as a cycle. Here's what I believe: Before we're born, we're all soul. We come into this world and inhabit our newly formed body, and it naturally becomes the focus of our lives. Growing and changing so rapidly, it can't help but grab our attention and energy. But somewhere along the way, the body begins to age rather than grow. That shift is like the transition between the in-breath and the out-breath, between and ocean wave crashing and receding. It's that pause when the flow of energy changes; what was expanding begins to contract. And in that out-breath, in the second half of the cycle of life, as our physical beings start to contract, the soul gains prominence - and that can make the second half of life a vital, deeply meaningful journey."

It really made me think about that change between when my body began to age, rather than to grow. I'm watching my children's bodies grow on what seems like a daily basis - it is a beautiful, magical thing. Then, in contrast, I feel my body aging and I don't think it is beautiful and magical. But I should. Not necessarily that aging is beautiful, but that, naturally, a greater emphasis can be placed on the growth of my soul.
